EQUARIUS BLOODSTOCK was founded in 1989 by Alistair Brown following an involvement in the Thoroughbred industry going back to the mid 1960s.
Breeder of his first Stakes Winner at the age of 19, Alistair, since he was a teenager, has had a more than avid, and in-depth interest in the Thoroughbred breed and been a stalwart and outspoken proponent of 'breed improvement'.
In 1974 he started 'The Thoroughbred in South Africa' magazine - which name was ultimately resurrected by his friend, the late Harwyn Witherspoon, some years later. Also in the 1970s and 1980s he provided all the South African research for the prestigious American weekly magazine ‘The Thoroughbred Record’ and continues to do research to this day for 'The Thoroughbred Times'. In the 1970s Alistair collaborated with the late American pedigree research expert ‘Sissy’ Woolums in reviewing and correcting all the South African data required for the then fledgling International Cataloging Standards.
As a broker, operating under the name EQUARIUS BLOODSTOCK , Alistair has been responsible for introducing to South Africa the Champion Sire FORT WOOD (USA) (Sadler's Wells - Fall Aspen) who has already sired three Horses Of The Year including the mighty HORSE CHESTNUT; and also Champion Sire AL MUFTI (USA) (Roberto - Lassie Dear) who has produced many Champions including VICTORY MOON (Horse of the Year in Dubai 2004) as well as the dam of JAY PEG . Other significant breed shapers imported to South Africa include QUI DANZIG (USA) (Danzig - Qui Royalty), GOLDKEEPER (USA) (Mr Prospector - Chapel of Dreams).
To date, 5 Horse Of The Year titleholders, and more than 25 National Champions have been sired by stallion-prospects introduced to South Africa through EQUARIUS BLOODSTOCK.
Although having specialized in sire-prospects - mares purchased on behalf of clients include: SIDNEY’S DREAM who went on to produce CHARGE FORWARD (the top rated Australian 2-year-old colt of 2004, described as “the fastest colt in Golden Slipper history”, and now standing at renowned Arrowfield Stud); LADY SHIRLEY BIRD (dam of four Graded Stakes performers for her new owner including G2 SWs DOG ROSE and KESTREL); SHE’S A TREAT (who became the dam of SW filly SHE’S ALL THAT), GARB OF GUISE (subsequently dam of dual SW filly TOGA), etc.
An even more limited foray into the purchase of yearlings resulted in the acquisition of Champion and G1 winner COLONIAL GIRL.
In the 1990s Alistair Brown's interest in serving the breed resulted in his joining the Council of the Thoroughbred Breeders Association of South Africa for six years, and he was also on the Pedigree Selection Panel for the National Yearling sales for seven years.
In 2006 a new Thoroughbred pedigree and research venture was conceived and temporarily launched before the logistics of being operated from Africa became problematical. This 'tool' which should be in every breeder's and owner's 'tool box' is currently being fine-tuned before it will be re-launched in late 2008.
